1953 Playboy Premier Issue Reprint

It's the one that started it all: the December 1953 issue of Playboy featuring Marilyn Monroe as the Centerfold. All of the original copies from that first production run have long since ended up in the hands of Playboy fans, subscribers and collectors, but now you can own the next best thing: an exact reproduction of that landmark publication and coveted piece of pop culture history. These reprinted issues present all of the original articles, advertisements and photographs precisely as they appeared back in '53, including the notorious Marilyn Monroe red background centerfold and pictorial by photographer Tom Kelley. The images were taken when Marilyn was a young model and aspiring actress and later published when she was already an established Hollywood star.

Brazilian actress Juliana Paes has been the face of Brazilian beer company Antartica for quite a while. Most beer commercials in Brazil are filled with sexual innuendo and there's a reason why she was picked to be their spokesperson. Juliana is actually a fine actress but her good looks have landed her in Brazilian Playboy, been caught panty-less by the paparazzi (A la Britney) and she's considered one of the country's top sex symbols.

The Work of Patrick Nagel

Patrick Nagel embodies the look of 1980's America. It's hard not to look of his images and not envision the times of Miami Vice and leg-warmers. His pin-ups were super glamazons, ready to devour you, full of power and not afraid to face the Gordon Gekko-Wall Street years.
Nagel first put his talents to work as a freelance artist in 1971 and by 1976 hebegan contributing regularly to Playboy, which extended the exposure and popularity of "the Nagel Woman" to a huge and loyal audience. In 1978, he created his first poster image for Mirage Editions. He also painted the cover of rock group Duran Duran's Rio album, which became the number one album in the world. The feeling of Nagel's work is reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints as well as of Art Deco styling, yet it is completely contemporary and universal in appeal. Starting from a photograph, he would create a simplified drawing, the translate the drawing to a painting. Bold, dark lines shape perspective out of flat, cool colours and stark white spaces; the result is what some have described as "fantasy realism." Patrick Nagel died of a heart attack in 1984 at the age of 38.

Carlos Zefiro - Vintage Erotica From Brazil

Carlos Zéfiro was the pseudonym of Alcides Aguiar Caminha, a Brazilian artist who drew underground erotic comics between the 1950's and 1970's. His small publications, or catecismos, were 24-32 pages long, crudely drawn and circulated clandestinely during that time. It was sold discreetly in newsstands and street markets, and slowly developed a cult following. They were the initiation manuals to many young man, before the age of explicit sex magazines and movies. It wasn't until one year before his death in 1992 that Carlos Zéfiro's identity was finally revealed in an interview to Brazilian Playboy magazine. He had hidden this secret identity even from his wife and family, who didn't suspect of his parallel life as an erotic cartoonist. It turned out that he was a public servant and feared legal action against his work, resulting in the loss of his government job. During the dictatorship era in Brazil an investigation began looking into the author of such pornographic work but the results came out inconclusive. Today, his work is very much prized as nostalgia and the original editions of the booklets he published are highly collectible and hard to find.

In 1997, original illustrations from Zéfiro's work were used on singer Marisa Monte's album cover and inserts, bringing a new found interest in his career.

Grazi Massafera @ Rolling Stone Magazine

The new issue of the Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone magazine brings aspiring actress Grazielli Massafera on it's September cover. The ex-Big Brother Brazil participant poses with a body-paint T-shirt with British band The Rolling Stones' tongue logo on it. Her rise to fame has generated plenty of controversy among the acting set as she was chosen as one of the main protagonists of an upcoming Brazilian soap. Keep it in mind that soaps are a big deal here. In the accompanying interview the ex-Playboy pin-up comments on the touchy topic:

"It's not my fault that there are good actors doing theatre that haven't had opportunities on TV and I, being a nobody, got there."

A Cena Muda - Ipanema, Rio

This is "A Cena Muda", a vintage magazine news stand near General Osorio Square, in Ipanema neighborhood, here in Rio. I've always admired all the murals that are painted around the whole kiosk, though they are no longer in tip-top shape. The designs are a bit Dali-esque, specially the fish-headed being on the first image. "A Cena Muda", that opened in late 2003, specializes in magazines from the 19th century all the way up to the 1970's, but they also sell vintage post cards, period trading-cards and movie star photographs. There you will find 1940's Vogues, 1960's Playboys and hundreds of mid-century Brazilian publications like "O Cruzeiro" and "Manchete". They also publish reprints of Brazilian cartoonist Carlos Zefiro's erotic work, that was sold underground in the 50's-60's because of it's explicit and graphic nature. Their display windows are quite good too with thematic tableaux of magazine groupings of a single theme. During the Pan American Games in July they had all old Pele covers in their display. Earlier in the year it was all Chico Buarque's youth that adorned it's window. Their current window display is vintage girlie magazines grouped with naked Barbie dolls! Love it!

I read somewhere that they might be relocating in the next month or so, to a different spot in Ipanema. If so, I will let you know.

Sex on The Streets

One can't help to notice, when walking around anywhere around Rio, the sheer amount of sexploitation that is rubbed on your face at every moment of the day. This cool character above is advertising a sex shop on a very busy intersection of downtown earlier today. Besides selling the usual dildos and vibrators, they also home deliver! By the way the guy is on stilts so you can't really miss him.




Most newsstands also display an enormous amount of nudie magazines with quite scandalous covers for American standards, mostly straight stuff. In Brazil you can buy hardcore porn and DVDs in plain sight next to your daily papers and M&Ms. They also prop these card board displays against their stands advertising the new issues of the fancier girlie publications, like Playboy. The brunette is a bimbo on a TV parody show, you know those that just stand there in bikinis, all smiles and no lines. The blond is a new semi-celebrity famous for being "the hick" on Brazilian Big Brother, but because of her big booty she supposedly earned US$350,000 to drop her panties for Playboy.
