The Girl From Ipanema - 1965

This 1965 video shows Brazilian singer/composer Tom Jobim singing his classic "Girl From Ipanema" alongside American pop singer Andy Williams. Besides the obvious retro charm of Andy Williams' "Lost In Space" sweater this is just a joy to watch and listen to. I love all these mellow Bossa Nova rhythms and being Brazilian-born myself it also brings back some great childhood flashbacks... Love it!

Bjork Performing @ Hammersmith Apollo - London

Goddess Bjork performing at London's Hammersmith Apollo on April 13Th and looking simply FAB! I love Bjork for all her originality and genuine fearless fashion sense, not to mention that she has got one of the most unique set of pipes out there. She always brings a little Nina Hagen to mind, another music-warrior-woman who has been beating her own drums since the 80's. Bjork's videos are a joy to watch as they are as out-there as her music can be. I own this live DVD set in which she performs at this church-like building, along with some Icelandic tribal chorus, that is simply amazing. Love you Bjork!

I just came across these great pictures of gorgeous British pop singer Sophie Ellis Bextor taken at a gallery party in London this week. I used to boogie to one of her big hits "Murder On The Dance Floor" during my Boston days and always loved the song's video for it's campy charm. It's reminds me a little of "Strictly Ballroom" and of how far one will go to win a dance competition. I hope you will enjoy it!

Mighty Thor - The God Of Metal

I spent a good part of my childhood watching those Marvel cartoons on TV and The Mighty Thor was one of my all time favorites. The animation was beyond basic: the frames were simply moved side-to-side a-la Speed Racer with some minimal mouth-moving effects, but as a kid you disregard all that stuff. Now a little heavy metal moment with Thor as a head-banging guitar ace, that amused quite a lot. Enjoy!

Cute Alert: Hera - Feels So Good

Icelandic singer/songwriter HERA has been living in New Zealand for about 10 years while cultivating and carving out a very successful career in her native land on the opposite side of the world. In this adorable video Hera sings "Feels So Good" and as she told me herself in an e-mail "All things that feel so good but may be slightly wrong ;)". Miami Winter Music Conference

The Miami Winter Music Conference starts tomorrow, March 25th to the 29th, and it's one of the biggest events for electronica in the world. With it's vast schedule of events, parties and club nights it brings a huge international crowd to Miami every year, to dance to top-shelf DJs and hear the latest in club music. Scarlett Johansson's New Album Promo Images

Scarlett Johansson is set to join the long line of Hollywood actors who've turned their hand to music when she releases her debut album in May 2008. Entitled "Anywhere I Lay My Head", Johansson's album will be a collection of Tom Waits covers - of which the grizzled songwriting legend has apparently lent his approval - with only one track an original composition. Needless to say, the Hollywood starlet has called in the favours from her celebrity chums, with David Bowie providing guest vocals on two tracks and Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner appearing throughout.
Speaking of the album, Johansson told Access Hollywood: "It was a whole other magical experience for me. It was amazing. I worked with some incredible people... Tom Waits' melodies are so beautiful and his voice is so distinct. I sent him some of my early, early recordings, and he said, 'Go ahead'. I've heard he's very pleased."
Johansson's previous dabblings in the music world have included an appearance in Justin Timberlake's What Goes Around... Comes Around video, a song on 2006 charity album Unexpected Dreams: Songs From The Stars, and an on-stage performance with The Jesus And Mary Chain at America's Coachella Festival in 2007.

Madonna @ Interview Magazine

With her new album "Hard Candy" coming out on April 29TH, Madonna has started her media blitz promoting her new musical effort. She is the cover girl of the new issue of Interview Magazine posing spread-legged on a boxing ring, a-la Christina "Dirrrty" Aguilera. This raunchy pose is so old-Madonna and I thought she had gotten over those cheap provocations many years back. At least her face looks normal on this image as she has been looking very odd lately, with some very puffed-out collagen cheeks.

The Goddess is also on the cover of the new Dazed & Confused issue and as the mag states she is "ready for anything".

These are a few more images of my adventures here in South Florida. I am always on the look-out for cool stuff for the blog and nothing like some celebrity homages to adorn the pages of Little-Pumpkins. I am very drawn to illustration, cartoons, advertising and visual images in general. I love cute icons, mascots, murals and specially when these images try to portray recognizable pop figures. I grouped a few images that caught my eye starting with a (still) pretty looking Britney Spears, followed by a very bad Tom Selleck portrait at an amusement park. Do they really think that the kids that ride those crappy rides will even know who Magnun PI is? Then a Barbarella-looking hybrid of Jane Fonda and once again Britney. Following that is a really good rendition of Pink and Robbie Williams (whom I am a HUGE fan). I am not too sure if the skinny figure in the back is meant to be Michael Jackson or not ( I hope not). At last, a photo of some guy trying to fool us to think that he is the real Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Yeah, right...

Nina Hagen - Punk Priestess Style Icon

I remember watching Nina Hagen perform live at Rock In Rio in the mid-80's and she was the belle of the ball, total media darling and fan favorite. She wore a waist-length red ponytail, a fitted black corset bodysuit, fishnet stockings and a thong which front part was the head of a stuffed toy puppy. She had the crowd going with her trade-mark sound, a mix of falsettos, primal growls and Betty Boop-esque singing (inner) voices. She was fresh, fearless and a great inspiration to dare to be who you want to be, not giving a damn to any status quo.

Born in East Germany, Nina Hagen had already gained a reputation as a flamboyant rock singer by the time she emigrated to the West in 1976, where she formed a band, signed to CBS Germany, and released their debut album, Nina Hagen Band, in 1978. It was followed in 1980 by Unbehagen. Hagen's first U.S. release, Nina Hagen Band EP (1980), was a four-song EP consisting of songs drawn from her two German releases. She moved to New York and made her first English-language LP, Nunsexmonkrock, in 1982. That and its follow-up, the Giorgio Moroder-produced Fearless (1983), charted briefly, and "New York New York" was a Top Ten dance club hit.

Madonna has already claimed her new album, Hard Candy, will "kick your ass." Turns out, she wasn't kidding! Witness the cover of her upcoming album, due April 29, featuring the pop diva sporting, yep, a wrestling belt. Featuring production by Pharrell Williams, Timbaland and Nate "Danja" Hills and an appearance by Justin Timberlake, Madonna's rep says the album's "about the juxtaposition of tough and sweetness."

I came across this image online of rocker Rod Stewart and his then-girlfriend Britt Ekland and had to post it here. I just love their sexy swagger and let-it-all-hang-out attitude, almost in the literal sense as well. The picture must have been taken sometime in the mid 70's and captures the essence of the period perfectly but in a timeless fashion as well. They look like they had a lot of fun together, if you know what I mean...

The B-52's New Album: Funplex

I just found out that one of my favorite 1980's party bands The B-52's has a new album coming out on March 25TH, their first in 16 years! The new album is titled "Funplex" and I just can't wait to hear it!! I saw them perform live only once in the mid 80's at Rock in Rio music festival and they were just awesome. I was watching The Family Guy a couple of weeks ago and I can't remember why but Peter Griffin was humming Rock Lobster. Love it!

Go Amy Go!

I stayed up last night to watch the Grammy Awards just to be able to watch Amy Winehouse's live performance. As she was not granted an US Visa in a timely fashion she resorted to a via-satellite performance from London - and was all worth the wait because she rocked! She grabbed five of the six awards she was running for including record of the year, song of the year and best new artist. She looked very surprised with all her awards as she fumbled words thanking her family and dedicating it "To my Blake, incarcerated!" - as her hubby is serving a jail sentence for a pub brawl. Amy looked fab in her black mini-dress and trade-mark beehive and gave out a full bodied soulful voice that would impress even the Winehouse skeptics. She sang "You Know I'm No Good" and "Rehab", songs that couldn't be more right-on in regards to her troubled past months. I think she is a fantastic singer and I was all smiles watching her sing and accept her golden gramophones.

Fergie performed next to John Legend and proved she can hold a tune like the best of then. I didn't love her outfit as that long neck scarf looked too "old lady" for her.

Fabulous Rihanna also rocked the house performing with The Times in one of the opening numbers. She is just so gorgeous and talented that she can do no wrong in my eyes and she glowed on stage last night. She didn't go home empty handed though as she won for best Rap/Song Collaboration with Jay-Z for "Umbrella" .

Tina Turner and Beyonce also had an outstanding Grammy performance in their "Proud Mary" duet - one of my favorites. Tina is still as hot and energetic as in her "Private Dancer" days and exhuded her "legend-status diva" even when rocking next to one of today's hottest talents.

Kanye West gave one of those cocky acceptance speechs that made me want to throw up. I get that people should have positive images of themselves but why do some rap/hip hop artists need to be so stuck up? Thumbs down!

I was shocked to see how HUGE Aretha Franklyn has become! I know she's an older lady and all but she looked like a small planet in that horrible one-shoulder lime green dress when performing during that b-o-r-i-n-g gospel number. She is way too fat to be exposing her arms, specially on live TV. The spaghetti straps on her gown were stuck deep in the creases of her shoulder fat and that was not a pretty sight. At least she had the clue to cover up her arms at the post-Grammy party, seen above with Brandy. Aretha is a legend and deserves all r-e-s-p-e-c-t but she needs a new stylist really bad!
