The Girl From Ipanema - 1965

This 1965 video shows Brazilian singer/composer Tom Jobim singing his classic "Girl From Ipanema" alongside American pop singer Andy Williams. Besides the obvious retro charm of Andy Williams' "Lost In Space" sweater this is just a joy to watch and listen to. I love all these mellow Bossa Nova rhythms and being Brazilian-born myself it also brings back some great childhood flashbacks... Love it!

Sophie Ellis Bextor In London

I just came across these great pictures of gorgeous British pop singer Sophie Ellis Bextor taken at a gallery party in London this week. I used to boogie to one of her big hits "Murder On The Dance Floor" during my Boston days and always loved the song's video for it's campy charm. It's reminds me a little of "Strictly Ballroom" and of how far one will go to win a dance competition. I hope you will enjoy it!

Cute Alert: Hera - Feels So Good

Icelandic singer/songwriter HERA has been living in New Zealand for about 10 years while cultivating and carving out a very successful career in her native land on the opposite side of the world. In this adorable video Hera sings "Feels So Good" and as she told me herself in an e-mail "All things that feel so good but may be slightly wrong ;)". Los Mono - Promesas

To make a great music video all you need is imagination, a good song to go with it and a video camera on hand. Forget about the over-the-top special effects, the back-up dancers, the helicopters and the video-hos. This GREAT music video by Chilean pop group Los Mono proves that the simplest ideas can a long way and to superb effect. I simply love it and can't get tired of watching this guy's move. He is awesome! Give it a try!

My Loony Bun is Fine Benny Lava!

This is probably one of the funniest things I've seen online in a while and I had to post it here too. The formula is rather simple: take a random Bollywood music video and get it translated - with subtitles - from what you think the words sound like in English. Example: turn your back to the screen and jot down whatever first comes to mind when you hear they sing - and voila! A masterpiece of hilarious non-sense that fits to a tee to what comes out of the performer's mouths. The auteur of this very creative oeuvre, Buffalax, unsatisfied with simply giggling at all those silly dance moves and group routines (and wardrobe), allowed me to ache with laughter watching his hysterical take on Indian cinema. Sample quotes: "Who put the goat in there? The yellow goat I ate", "Someday I sell DNA" and the classic "I'd love to see you pee on us tonight!". I guarantee you will love it too!

FruitaBü - Fruit to the People!

I just arrived back in the US and already am hypnotized by the TV commercials. I LOVE the FruitaBü ads! Not sure how long they've been around but it's new to me. They are so colorful and visually appealing that I can see how a kid would want to nag their parents to death to get a hold of those fruit candies. I probably never will actually eat one of them but the whole visual design - and catchy jingle - got me hooked from the first time I saw it. I had to freeze-frame my Tivo to be able to enjoy every second of it, as it's so much information at once that can get anyone dizzy!

Vanessa da Mata @ Canecão

Brazilian singer Vanessa da Mata is one talented & gorgeous woman. I was at Canecão watching her new concert this Sunday night with my "special friend" A and we had a great time. I only knew three or four of her songs before the concert, stuff I hear on the radio or at Galeria Cafe, here in Rio, but her repertoire was flawless. She is 31 years-old, hails from Mato Grosso and her third album "Sim" has just been released. Besides singing she is also an accomplished composer, having penned hits for singers Maria Bethânia and Ana Carolina. Her hits include "Não Me Deixe Só" and "Ai ai ai..." and I often catch myself humming them endlessly. Her current hit in the Brazilian radios is the gorgeous ballad "Boa Sorte/Good Luck", a beautiful partnership with Ben Harper. The song was actually done over a phonecall, with Ben Harpen in Los Angeles and Vanessa in Brazil. She sang it to him on the phone, and with a translation in hand, he composed the melody. Ton Hyll's Concert @ Espaço News in Rio

This past Friday evening I went to watch my good friend Ton Hyll's concert at Espaço News at São Conrado Fashion Mall, here in Rio. Being the chameleon he is, there were several costume changes throughout his set, accompanying and illustrating his eclectic musical style. His repertoire is a voyage through many facets of Brazilian music, reissuing old classics with a contemporary finish. Samplings from Britney Spears and Annie Lennox were peppered in, to unexpected and successful results, in a couple of songs. His versions of well known songs by singer Marina and and 70's girl group Frenéticas had the audience singing along with enthusiastic participation. I had a blast and was very glad to be able to be there to support him in his first solo show. His CD comes out soon and I'll let you know about it as well. He will be performing at Espaço News for two more shows on 09/28 and 10/05. Check it out!

Chloe Sevigny in "Myself" by Marcelo Krasilsic

I love this!!! I keep smiling and giggling every time I watch this great video directed by photographer Marcelo Krasilcic. Chloe Sevigny is adorably yummy with her "No, no, no, no, myself, myself, myself, yes, yes, yes, yes, YES!!!" Just brilliant and I can't get enough of it.

This short video is part of Diane Pernet's "You Wear it Well", shown at the last Iguatemi Filme Fashion festival, and it shows lovely Ms. Sevigny trying on outfits by designer Kai Kuhne. The actress is the star of the new campaign of Brazilian clothing label Ellus, also shot by Marcelo Krasilcic.

Siouxsie's New Album - Mantaray

High-Priestess of Punk Siouxsie Sioux has a brand new album, Mantaray, coming out on October 02. This is Siouxsie's first solo album though she had participated in many individual projects before, away from The Banshees and The Creatures. Recently she contributed on Basement Jaxx's album Kish Kash, with the title song, as singer and composer. She is considered one of the most influential singers of her era, with an unique singing style and looks to match.

Siouxsie brings back many great memories of the mid 80's when I was dancing to her songs at Crepusculo de Cubatao, in Rio, wrapped in dark clothing and believing I was soooo cool.

Ultra Nate @ The Week Rio

The Baltimore-native singer Ultra Nate will be performing at Rio de Janeiro's new mega club The Week tomorrow night, Saturday September 01. She will be singing tracks from her 5Th album "Grime, Silk & Thunder". Her new single "Automatic" is a cover from the 1984 Pointer Sisters dance smash hit. The original song reached #5 in the Billboard charts by the way. Ultra is known for her huge dance-floor classics like "Free", "Found a Cure", "Joy" and "Desire", and anyone that has been to a decent club in the 16 years will recognize them within the first accords.

Pitty Does Rihanna - Umbrella

Brazilian singer Pitty covers Rihanna's smash hit "Umbrella" at a live concert in Sorocaba, SP. Pitty adds in her rock'n'roll-chick attitude and does not disappoint! I find her very cool and love her overall attitude. She hails from Bahia, a place that has been producing Brazilian music deities for decades. She goes against the grain by not singing axe or regional folk stuff. Her musical style, and looks, have a much harder edge than the hippie-dippy Bahian vibe. Goddess Annie Lennox has just realeased the first single "Dark Road" from her upcoming album "Songs of Mass Destruction". Mini Moni - Lucky Cha Cha Cha

Super kawaii!! Super cute in Japanese!! I am not too sure what is this all about but I love this saccharine-sweet Japanese girl group Mini Moni. I can only make out "under the moonlight" somewhere in the song and that's where it ends. Totally addictive and cavity inducing.
