Madonna @ Vanity Fair's May 2008 Issue

Goddess Madonna is the cover star of May 2008's Vanity Fair issue. The feature entitled "Madonnarama!", interviewed by Andy Cohen and photographed by Steven Meisel, coincides with the debut of her latest album "Hard Candy". A little snippet from the article's header:

As she nears 50, Madonna’s narrative is shifting. Yes, there’s another new super-pop album, Hard Candy, with Justin Timberlake and Pharrell Williams. But there’s also Filth and Wisdom, the feature film she’s co-written, produced, and directed, and I Am Because We Are, her documentary on Malawi, the aids-ravaged country where she controversially adopted her third child. Whisked to L.A. for an intense prep session, followed by an almost two-hour interview, the author explores the evolution of the Madonna myth as she harnesses her image-making genius to a cause, a philosophy, and the search for her true self.

I can't wait to get my own copy and will be on the look out for it in my mail box, as Vanity Fair is one of most anticipated publications every month, next to New York Magazine and Entertainment weekly.

PrideFest Parade @ Lake Worth, Florida

Are pride parades all about drag queens? The answer is no but they do add some glitz factor to the festivities and without them it would be pretty dull. Same goes for go-go boys...
These images from today's Pal Beach Post show Miami's drag queen "Adora" as she rides on "The Cottage" float during the parade held as part of the fifteenth Annual PrideFest of the Palm Beaches yesterday in downtown Lake Worth. Organized by Compass, the two-day festival is among the largest gay and lesbian festivals in Florida. Who knew?

Dita Von Teese @ The New York Times

Domains Section.
Show Stopper: Dita Von Teese — burlesque performer and lingerie designer for the Wonderbra company — lives in a 1920s, three-bedroom Craftsman home in the heart of Hollywood.
Biggest misconception about burlesque: That it’s about dancing around in hot pants with feather boas. Burlesque was about the striptease. The stars of burlesque took their clothes off, end of story, period.
Hardest thing about stripping: To make it look effortless and natural.

Her first corset: It was out of my life for a little while. It was stolen, by a friend of mine’s daughter. One day she returned it and said she was sorry. I was happy. I have hundreds of corsets, but that is the most important one.

Worst moment onstage: My hair caught on fire. I do an act where I sit on a vanity table that has candelabras on it. Well, there was a lot of hair spray going on. I realized what was happening and put my hair out. The show went on.

Next big purchase: I’m getting ready to make a new show, and that is always a big expense. It will involve $80,000 worth of costumes and props. This one is going to be especially rhinestone heavy.
Personal hero: Mae West. There hasn’t been another actress in the world who wrote every line she ever said in a film.

Morning routine: My waking time always changes, because sometimes I am really jet lagged. When I’m home, I am up around 9 o’clock. First, I check my BlackBerry, which is next to me in bed. Then I let my dogs outside and get everybody breakfast.

Best thing about divorce from Marilyn Manson: There’s a long list. I am happy to have the drugs out of my life.

Fear about new love: That I’ll fall for a man who wants a modern, minimalist interior.

Prized possession: I took my engagement diamond and had it transformed at Christian Dior in Paris into a beautiful ring. It’s nice; it’s big. I feel like I suffered greatly for that diamond, and it needed to be reborn into something better.

Performance piece: Yes, I do perform in a giant martini glass, but I don’t keep it at home. All my props are kept in storage, a really big storage space, because I have a lot of things even bigger than that glass. I have never been where they are stored, to be honest. It’s somewhere in Los Angeles.

Animal friends: I have various taxidermied animals. I have a peacock, swans and birds in large glass domes. They’re beautiful.

Rainy-day activities: Sitting in front of the fire with my pets, two dachshunds and three Devon Rex cats, which is a breed that has unusually large ears and wide-set eyes.

Indispensable gadget: A 1940s phone station. It’s a stand that holds the phone, and you sit in it. You can’t move around. I used to have a cordless phone and I hated it.

Waistline: I’m not technically a tight lacer. It’s a fetish, in which you wear extremely tight corsets all the time. I don’t sleep in my corsets, and I’m not obsessed with obtaining the world’s smallest waist. My waist is around 18 inches.

Velvet painting: A painting of me by an artist named Olivia, who specializes in pinups.

Burlesque memento: I have an artifact of the famed burlesque star Sally Rand, from 1939. It’s a box that says “Winter Underwear for Men” on it. Inside is a crocheted warmer for a man’s equipment. It’s hysterical.

Guilty pleasure: Eating foie gras in Paris. That has gotten me into a lot of trouble with PETA. But it is a guilty pleasure; I feel guilty and horrible about it.

Extra bedrooms: I turned one of them into a dark, jewel box of a bedroom. Another is a wardrobe with my dresses, shoes and vintage clothes. The third is devoted to my hat collection and vanity. It’s a real powder room.

Collections: I collect in a crazy way. I have at least 15 collections. I collect vintage hair combs; vintage clothes; vintage lingerie; hats; jewelry; cigarette holders.

Favorite collection: My hats. When I look at them I can’t believe these are things that women wore on the street every day. They are dramatic and distinctive.

Treasured eras: For taxidermy, Victorian; for furniture, Art Deco; for lingerie, 1940s stockings and Victorian corsets; hats I like mid-1940s, when they wore the little tilted hats, like men’s hats.

What she drives: I have two classic cars, a 1939 Chrysler New Yorker and a 1965 Jaguar S-Type. I drove a Chrysler 300. But I just got a new car, a BMW Z4.

Fanciest corset: It’s by Mr. Pearl, without a doubt the world’s most-sought-after corset maker. He lives in Paris, and all the couturiers go to him. He has an unmatched talent for creating the perfect wasp waist. Each corset requires between 6 and 20 fittings.

Evening routine: I have no routine. I am happy if I am in bed by 1 a.m. It’s a great victory for me if I can sleep eight hours or more.

By her bed: A beautiful Art Deco box with a condom in it. I’m a single girl.

Favorite chore: Grocery shopping. I wasn’t always able to afford food, so I love putting things in my cart and realizing I can afford them.

Always in fridge: Eggs and truffle sauce. I order the sauce online. It is called Truffle Gatherers sauce. It is so good with eggs. It is very precious to me.

What she misses about America when abroad: More value to the dollar.

Fitness routine: About 20 minutes jumping on the trampoline and an hour of Pilates. I often take Sundays off.

What she wanted to be when she grew up: A ballerina.

Obsession: Ballet shoes. I have a collection dyed in every color of the rainbow.

Belief system: There are superstitions in burlesque. You aren’t supposed to put your shoes on the table. I try to pay attention to that, but I really like looking at my shoes, so I put them on the table all the time.

Perfect kitchen: One of my big extravagances when I moved out of my former husband’s house was a matching pink stove and refrigerator in ’50s style. Unlike real vintage items, they work.
Obsolete item she can’t bear to part with: Everything I have is obsolete. That’s the point.

Christina Aguilera For Stephen Webster

Christina Aguilera looking stunning in the new ad campaign for jeweler Stephen Webster. Christina has come a long way from tween mouseketeer, via dirrrty X-tina, to her current 1940's glamour gal. She has had some serious fashion missteps along the way but finally she has come to her own skin. She does incorporate the classic Hollywood starlet persona perfectly and this is the best she has ever looked in my opinion. I guess motherhood did her very good!

Make Me A Supermodel: The Bronnie Tee

Last night I sat through the yawn-inducing "Make Me A Supermodel" reunion show. The event was hosted by Bravo's Andy Cohen, doing the "sleaze" job by trying to instigate the contestants against one another. The 14 original hopefuls were all back together, sitting by the show's catwalk, and were also joined by their hosts and judge panel. This episode's editing was shoddy and seemed to cut off when things were about to get good. Not many unseen behind-the-scenes snippets unfortunately, though Holly telling her squirrel stew hunting story was pretty priceless. She let her inner Virginia hillbilly out once and for all, and she came out cuter than ever. The bulk of the show was dedicated to Ronnie & Ben's bro-mance and Bravo's shameless plug of their "Broonie" T-shirts, available for sale at their website for US$19.95. One contestant even dared to wonder whether both models would have stuck out this long had their "relationship" never gotten so much air-play. Makes me wonder too, bud...
The final episode is this coming Thursday and I will let you know who gets the big bucks.

Victoria Beckham's Double Dose

Victoria Beckham went fashion-chameleon this month, first as Vogue UK's April cover celeb and on the current ad campaign of Marc Jacobs. On the ads she is looking more Scary than Posh in my opinion, but I give her kudos for daring to go "un-pretty" for the fashion label. It seems to me that celebs nowadays have become "labels of themselves", always so polished and perfect-looking that is fresh to find people that goes against the grain. As a Brit she is showing that she hasn't lost her eccentric side or sense of humour by donning a really silly little bow atop an equally silly wig. My only advice would be to lay off the spray tan and bronzer powder, if she wants to look human at least .

New Racial Controversy: Vogue & King Kong?

This is the first time a black man appears on the cover of America Vogue and the instead of applauding the magazine for the milestone some critics already found a way of turning it into a racial controversy. Maybe it's because of the turbulent times of election year and Barack Obama's eminent nomination but allusions to the movie King Kong are already circulating the web. The nay-sayers accuse NBA star LeBron James of being portrayed in an aggressive gorilla-stance, arms apart and hunched over, mouth agape showing his teeth, while embracing the Caucasian and delicate Brazilian super-dupper-model Giselle Bundchen. Critics will find a way to stir up trouble and see evil in the most remote place or innocent of actions, so it always seem. The more I look at the King Kong posters the more I see the similarities but I don't believe that was photographer Annie Leibovitz's or Anna Wintour's hidden agenda as after all this is Vogue magazine people! It's not a tabloid or some exploitative/funny publication.
I wish they had nixed this LeBron (who?) guy - that has as much to do with Vogue as Andre Leon Talley has to do with Sports Illustrated - and had Giselle in the strong arms of her hunk Tom Brady. That would have been a GREAT Vogue cover and he wouldn't have been compared to a white gorilla.

Star Wars Original Limited-Edition Prints

From packaging to catalogs, the vintage Kenner Star Wars line is known for its bright images and graphics. For the most part photo art, or photographic prints that have been hand-altered in some way, were the master pieces of art used to create the images seen in boxes and catalogs around the world. However, photo art required the use of original photography, for Kenner almost never used illustrations or drawings for their images.
The task of taking the photos that would ultimately be used to produce photo art or that would perhaps remain unaltered was given to an outside design firm. While Kenner would ultimately provide guidance and have the final say on approval, it was up to the photographer at the studio to provide the photos, under the guidance of the design firm.
The photographer in charge of virtually all vintage Star Wars photography work at the outside design firm used by Kenner was Kim Simmons. He was ultimately responsible for images that would be used for packaging, comps (or mock-ups), some publicity images, and some of the slide presentations. Fortunately, for Star Wars collectors and enthusiasts alike, Kim meticulously kept nearly all of his work that was not given to Kenner as final art pieces.
Now you can own a piece of history by ordering from our exclusive selection of limited edition prints based on Kim’s work. Each print is hand-numbered and will never be offered for sale again once the allocated quantity of each individual print size has been distributed. These are no ordinary prints either. They are printed on the highest quality Fuji archival photography paper with metallic ink, and have been created from high resolution drum scans of each original negative or transparency and are unparalleled in quality. Don’t pass up this once in a lifetime chance to purchase your very own piece of Star Wars history!

There are nine different prints to choose from, in sizes of 8 x 10 to 20 x 24, including a Princess Leia wardrobe lay-out. Star Wars Action Figure Limited Edition Prints ($30-$80)

The 10 Unhealthiest Places In America

That's what publisher CQ Press reveals in its 16th annual list. Twenty-one factors from infant mortality to obesity to cancer rates are compiled for the rankings.

No. 1: Mississippi
Topping the list as the most unhealthy state in America, the Magnolia State has stolen the dubious honor from last year's "winner," Louisiana. Its title is well-earned: Mississippi has the highest rate of teenage births in the nation, the highest age-adjusted death rate, the highest infant mortality rate and the highest rate of sexually transmitted diseases. It also has the largest precentage of obese adults and adults who do not exercise.

No. 2: Louisiana
The Pelican State may no longer be the most unhealthy state in the nation, but it's pretty close at No. 2.Louisiana has the second-highest age-adjusted death rate, the second-highest infant mortality rate and the worst access to primary care.

No. 3: New Mexico
Not living up to its nickname as the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico has seen its health care situation continually decline since 1998.It has the third-highest teenage birth rate, poor prenatal care, high rates of suicide and poor health insurance coverage. The availability of hospital beds and primary care is also poor.

No. 4: Nevada
For the fourth year in a row, the Silver State remains in the No. 4 spot.It is the No. 1 worst state for prenatal care and has the second-highest suicide rate in America.

No. 5: Florida
The Sunshine State remains as the fifth most unhealthy state for the second year in a row.The percentage of its population not covered by health insurance is one of the worst in the country. It also ranks fourth for new cancer cases and third for new AIDS cases.

No. 6: Georgia
Things aren't peachy in the Peach State when it comes to health. Just 10 years ago, Georgia ranked as the 30th most unhealthy state. Fastforward to today, where it nearly makes the top five.It ranks fourth for the number of new AIDS cases reported and fifth for the number of sexually transmitted diseases. On the plus side, it has one of the best rates of child immunization.

No. 7: South Carolina
For the eleventh year in a row, the Palmetto State has fallen into the top ten unhealthy states.Contributing to its rank are its high percentage of low birthweight babies, high infant mortality rate, high number of new AIDS cases and high rate of sexually transmitted diseases.

No. 8: Oklahoma
The health outlook wasn't always so poor in the Sooner State. In 1993, Oklahoma was in the middle of the pack, instead of topping the list. Its high teenage birth rate, poor prenatal care, high age-adjusted death rate and high percentage of people not covered by health insurance are just some of the factors keeping it there.

No. 9: Alabama
Moving two spots up the list, the Yellowhammer State is just a smidge more unhealthy this year, compared to last year's rankings.Alabama is in the top five for low birthweight babies, age-adjusted death rate, infant mortality, sexually transmitted diseases, poor primary care access, obesity and non-exercising adults.

No. 10: Delaware
The First State rejoins the top 10 since its last visit in 2004.Helping to bring Delaware down are its percentage of mothers receiving late or no prenatal care, its high infant mortality rate, high rate of new AIDS cases and sexually transmitted diseases.

The Beauty and The Beast

These photos were taken at the Versace Men's Wear launch party at Barney's, in New York earlier this week. Brazilian bombshell Isabeli Fontana looking like a supermodel should: simply stunning! She is flanked by THE Donatella Versace that could not be freakier looking, with those huge fake collagen lips and weird face-work. Doesn't she have a single honest friend to tell her that she has gone WAY overboard and everyone makes fun of her duck face? Donatella is a glamorous successful business woman, heading one of the world's most recognizable brand-names but she turned into some SNL parody of herself. Make her stop! She is scaring me!
Click images to enlarge but be warned that up-close it's even more frightening.

Lacquer Sitting Buddhas @ Vivre

I love these lacquered Buddha statuettes I found at Vivre. Their pop-ish colors give it a totally modern tongue-in-cheek touch to an eclectic decorated home. I have a teeny faux-jade Buddha that sits atop my fridge, back to the front door, to attract wealth as Asian-Brazilian superstition dictates.
These spiritual resin handmade statuettes are suppose to bring luck and peace plus a jolt of color to your home. Lacquer finish. No two are alike. Choose orange, yellow, red, or green. 18"tall. And if the US$450.00 is too steep of a price tag you can always visit your local Chinatown for a least expensive option. Hit Home Depot's paint department and grab a can of super-glossy spray paint and make your own one-of-a-kind icon.

Murakami & Louis Vuitton @ Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum has finally confirmed it will host a pop-up Louis Vuitton shop to coincide with its Takashi Murakami exhibit starting next month. They've also put select items online to whet your appetite until the exhibit kicks off on April 4, like the super-adorable cushions and T-shirt above. But the real stars of the store will be the "monogramouflage" Vuitton handbags, which will sport a new monogram pattern created by Murakami. Images of the collection haven't been released, but we're kind of hoping the flower products online are a sneak preview.

Victoire de Castellane Is My Soul Mate

I came across this great short video on Dior Fine Jewelry's designer Victoire de Castellane on Style.com and had to post it here too. As I watched it I realized why I liked her designs for Dior so much - we are soul mates! The fabulous Victoire loves the same things that I do, like Japanese toys, miniatures in general and fake food props, prominently on display at her Paris office. Her collection of Disney snow globes is an homage to Jeff Koons, whom I am also a big fan, and such details are clearly apparent on her gorgeous creations. She admits that she likes everything "fake" and gets inspired by colorful and unusual everyday-things like bolts of neon plastic string, kept in overflowing baskets in her office.
She admits that "I would love to be Jessica Rabbit, but I'm more maybe the stepmother of "White Snow", clearly showing her sense of humor and "I'm a child-at-heart" sprit de vie.

A few images of my faux-food collection, held at the Pumpkin Mansion's permanent archive and a selection of my books on Jeff Koons. I do own a signed Koons print as I can't even dream of buying one of his sculptures or original paintings, unless I win the Lotto.

Chrysler to Offer Wireless Internet Access in Its Cars

Chrysler is looking to pick up its sagging sales by being the first to offer in-car Internet access in the U.S. Later this year, an unspecified mobile broadband (read: cellular data) radio will be offered as an option on Chrysler vehicles, with the goal of making it standard on all of the company's cars down the road. A Wi-Fi router will be installed in the new cars to allow any Wi-Fi-enabled device in the vehicle to take advantage of the connection. That means no wasting your cell phone battery or messing with add-on cards to get your laptop online from the road. You'd simply connect to the car's Wi-Fi like you would your home network.

Ugly Betty Doll

Here’s a gift for the true “Ugly Betty” superfan in your life. In fact, I think Betty Suarez herself would probably have something like this.
Madame Alexander has created two Ugly Betty dolls that will be available in June at FAO Schwarz and specialty doll shops. The 18-inch Cloth Ugly Betty and the 8-inch Vinyl Ugly Betty both wear the “Guadalajara” poncho that Betty (America Ferrera) wore on her first day at Mode magazine. The vinyl Ugly Betty has a suggested retail price of US$69.95, while the Cloth Ugly Betty is US$44.95. Wish list!

Miami Winter Music Conference

The Miami Winter Music Conference starts tomorrow, March 25th to the 29th, and it's one of the biggest events for electronica in the world. With it's vast schedule of events, parties and club nights it brings a huge international crowd to Miami every year, to dance to top-shelf DJs and hear the latest in club music. A bit more about it from their site:

"Winter Music Conference, in its 23rd year, is regarded as the singular networking event in the dance music industry, attracting professionals from over 62 different countries. With its high concentration of top international artists, DJs and industry professionals, WMC permeates the international press and is thereby one of the most publicized events in the business. Every aspect of the industry is represented including the top technological innovators, artists, DJs, producers, radio and video programmers, retailers, distributors, audio manufacturers and many more. There are countless reasons why people from all over the world return year after year for this event, the most outstanding one being that there is nothing else in the world like it."

Dog Torture

You have to agree that whenever you see a dog-dressed-in-human-like-clothing you get that "How cuuuuuute..." blending into a "How saaaaaaaaad..." feeling. Paris Hilton comes to mind as one of those top offenders, torturing her poor Tinklebell into wearing little dog shoes with some matching pink outfit. I guarantee that dogs hate wearing shoes. I'll forgive owners that do it to save their pooch's tender paws from the hazards of city living (broken glass, snow salt, etc) but otherwise dogs don't care about fashion too much. My beloved Booboo was dressed once for Halloween but I could tell that he hated it all the way through, specially his antenna head gear.
I took the images above at the Palm Beach Pet Parade last week, hosted by no one other than Snoopy himself. Snoopy was only a hit with the human attendees as the canine kind did not spare him from many barks and growls, as they looked terrified by that 5'9" giant dog costume.

Make Me a Supermodel: NSFW Video

Here are the images from the models last assignment on "Make Me A Supermodel" by photographer Mathew Rolston. I am also including an YouTube video recap of their NSFW photo shoot. Perry had the most daring challenge by enduring a tuck-job but the final images show that it was all worth the humiliation. The final episode will be two weeks away as the next show will be the 12-model reunion and probable bitch-fest (I hope).
Enjoy!

Easter Bunnies

Easter is tomorrow so to help you get in the holiday spirit I share a couple of cute bunnies and peeps images with you. Chocolate is actually good for you and is suppose to work as an anti-depressant as well, FYI. The tough part is to find real chocolate Easter eggs around where I live, you know the large hollow kind that is filled with goodies. When I lived in Boston I had to drive out of the city and go to a Brazilian market to buy them or go to the North End, the Italian neighborhood, as they are traditional in Europe too. Here all I find is the really cheap kind that tastes more like play-doh than chocolate and to eat bad calorie-filled junk food I'd rather wait for the real thing.

Scarlett Johansson's New Album Promo Images

.

Scarlett Johansson is set to join the long line of Hollywood actors who've turned their hand to music when she releases her debut album in May 2008. Entitled "Anywhere I Lay My Head", Johansson's album will be a collection of Tom Waits covers - of which the grizzled songwriting legend has apparently lent his approval - with only one track an original composition. Needless to say, the Hollywood starlet has called in the favours from her celebrity chums, with David Bowie providing guest vocals on two tracks and Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner appearing throughout.
Speaking of the album, Johansson told Access Hollywood: "It was a whole other magical experience for me. It was amazing. I worked with some incredible people... Tom Waits' melodies are so beautiful and his voice is so distinct. I sent him some of my early, early recordings, and he said, 'Go ahead'. I've heard he's very pleased."
Johansson's previous dabblings in the music world have included an appearance in Justin Timberlake's What Goes Around... Comes Around video, a song on 2006 charity album Unexpected Dreams: Songs From The Stars, and an on-stage performance with The Jesus And Mary Chain at America's Coachella Festival in 2007.

Make Me A Supermodel: The Final Four

Last night's episode of "Make Me A Supermodel" was a feast for the eyes, serving what the home audience most likes to savour: nudity, nudity and more nudity! The episode started on a sad note with Shannon's early departure from the show. I did believe that she would make it to the finals but she did not get enough votes to stay in the competition and I am sure that her smug attitude didn't help her in the end either. Holly couldn't hide her disappointment with Ronnie's return to the model's townhouse and this is making her seem very petty to me.
Tyson shows up at the house with guest visitor Naomi Campbell so the models can "ooh ahh" over her. It was just purposeless as she didn't give them any tips or constructive advice besides taking a look at their portfolios. It read like Tyson was just kissing her ass for jobs that she got for him in the past, my opinion. She came across fake-y and vapid, am I wrong?

Their last main photo assignment was a session with renowned photographer Matthew Rolston and the theme was the four elements: earth, wind, fire and water. That was the perfect excuse to get the models naked again (thanks Bravo!) and expose plenty of skin on the late night cable show. The models were shown baring all, being oiled up and having their privates intimately groomed. Perry had the most daring shoot going full-frontal, even if the had his manhood tucked between his legs, shaved crotch and all. He was "water", dripping wet in all his glory. Trés gay! Ronnie was "earth", covered in dirt in a woodland setting, looking like a wood nymph. Ben had it easy this week as he got the "beauty shot" of the guy's assignments. He was "wind" and just stood there with his "angry stare", covered in sheer black chiffon and even I will admit that the images came out great. He had no heavy make-up like the other guys did so that was to his unfair advantage. Holly, gorgeous as ever, was "fire", in a bald skin-tone cap and severe make-up. Later on flames were digitally added to her head making her image simply superb. The following night the models are taken to a SOHO art gallery opening and are surprised to find their photos blown up wall-size as part of the exposition.

For their last runway assignment they were coached by the fabulous Christian Siriano, of Project Runway fame. Christian is a natural-born superstar and he gave them the best straight-up advice, with his trade mark quick wit and sassy humour. He even designed a dress specially for Holly to wear, though it looked too similar to the one he did for Victoria Beckham on his Bryant Park presentation, just in different colors. The models each had to wear and perform three diverse looks , going from barely-there swim wear, via a really silly casual look and to a serious/chic evening wear mood. The judges gave them their final criticisms: Perry - weird shoulders, Ben - still lifeless runway, Ronnie and Holly - lose some weight.
These are the final four contestants and now America will choose through votes who gets the big prizes. I LOVE Ronnie but I did give my 10 votes for Holly. She is the only one that has a chance, once she trims up, to really achieve any success in the business. The truth is that only female models really make it big, as you can count on one hand the male models that reached that level (Tyson, Markus...err...help me here). Ronnie will be a celeb in gay circles and probably will get a GLAAD award next year. He'll make the cover of OUT, Genre and The Advocate but sadly that will be it... As I said I've voted for him all along but this should be about who can be made into a supermodel not a popularity contest, what the show turned into sadly. America voted to re-elect Bush, so what do they know about supermodels anyway?

Fergie For Kipling

Celebrities will do anything for a buck these days and Fergie is no exception, so it seems. She can currently be seem as the face of Kipling bags, you know, the one with the monkey logo. This is definitely not my favorite campaign around as neither the bags or Fergie look that great on the images. I am sure she pocketed a pretty penny to advertise their products but she might as well grab them while she's (still) hot.

The Perils of Florida Living

Florida has thousands of miles of gorgeous sandy beaches and tropical temperature waters but many dangers lurk beneath the deep. Sharks also seem to be all around lately as the last time I went to the beach near my house I saw the posts above warning bathers from a migrating school of "spinner" sharks (image below) very close to the coast. They are called spinners because they leap out of the water in a rotating motion when they grab prey, hopefully just fish. Needless to say I didn't even dip my toe in the water as the idea of sharks nearby terrify me. I did look intently at the ocean all afternoon that day but didn't catch any glimpses of the so-called spinners.
This past Sunday I was chatting with someone at the gym and he tells me that at another beach a few miles from my house beach-goers could see sharks (spinners?) very close to shore trying to attack seabirds that were too dumb to know not to float right before the waves. S-C-A-R-Y!

Great Street Art @ Wooster Collective

Since moving to a very gentrified area of South Florida I've been missing the great graffiti art that I used to stumble upon on most of Rio de Janeiro's street corners. I like to get my fix by visiting Wooster Collective, a site that is dedicated to showcasing and celebrating ephemeral art placed on streets in cities around the world. They have the best images of street art, plus cool posts on related gallery openings and features on artist's portfolios as well. Check it out!

Adriana Lima @ GQ

Supermodel (and fellow Brazilian) Adriana Lima is GQ's April 2008 cover girl. She is mostly known as a Victoria's Secret Angel and for her sultry green eyes and pouty lips on the Maybelline campaigns. Adriana is 25 years old and hails from Bahia, in the Northeast part of Brazil. She has been linked to several male celebrities including Lenny Kravitz and Derek Jeter. Currently Lima is dating Serbian basketball player Marko Jarić of the NBA Minnesota Timberwolves. This is Adriana's second GQ cover and it's April 2006 issue was the year's best selling for the magazine.
In an accompanying interview with GQ in the same issue, Lima told the magazine that she is a devoted Catholic who attends church every Sunday and is a virgin. "Sex is for after marriage," she explained. "They (men) have to respect that this is my choice. If there's no respect, that means they don't want me." US GQ dubbed her as "The World's Most Voluptuous Virgin."

Cool Shop Window In Boston

My pal Seth sent me these photos he took from a jewelry store display in Boston's South End neighborhood. The cool display is made from garden hoses, to a very eye-catching effect.
Have you got some pictures for me? Saw something cool and interesting and want to share with the world? E-mail me the images (via the link on the right column) and I'll post the ones that have the best fit for Little-Pumpkins. High resolution please, folks!

Cute Alert: Pug In Furs

Nothing like a cute pug photo to cheer up my day. This image is from the 2008 Palm Beach Pet Parade, that I did attend, though I did not take the photo above. I was there with my camera but couldn't wait until the small breeds came out as I was on a tight schedule that day. I'll post some miscellaneous images here soon, I promise.

Marimekko@ H & M

Here’s a very early look at what to expect from H&M's tribute to Marimekko, which hits stores April 10. A brief summary: colors, prints, and more colorful prints. Since it’s not a designer collaboration like Karl Lagerfeld or Roberto Cavalli, the price point is lower than you might expect. A one-piece swimsuit is $34.90, an apron dress is $49.90. The 50 piece collection also includes menswear: Bermuda shorts are $39.90, short-sleeved shirts are $29.90. On the whole, the collection packs enough vivid patterns and punchy colors to make dressing for even the stickiest summer afternoon feel a little more like preparing for a tropical vacation.

Tattoo Sleeves

With this incredible invention, you can get a bad-ass tattoo as quick and easy as putting on a shirt. Just slip one of these Tattoo Sleeves over your arm and you'll be the envy of every dock worker and biker chick for miles around. And kids... wear 'em to school and see how quickly your street-cred rises!
The principal behind Tattoo Sleeves is quite simple -- They're kind of like sheer nylon stockings with detailed tattoo graphics printed on them. One size fits all. Each package contains TWO tattoo sleeves of the same style, so you can cover both arms or share one with a buddy.
This reminded me of Jean-Paul Gaultier's last mermaid-themed couture show, with plenty of very similar sailor tattoos opera gloves and patterns, a recurring theme for Gaultier for many, many seasons. Now you can get a "couture" look for less than you'd pay for taxes on the least expensive item from Gaultier's fab product line.

Madonna @ Interview Magazine

With her new album "Hard Candy" coming out on April 29TH, Madonna has started her media blitz promoting her new musical effort. She is the cover girl of the new issue of Interview Magazine posing spread-legged on a boxing ring, a-la Christina "Dirrrty" Aguilera. This raunchy pose is so old-Madonna and I thought she had gotten over those cheap provocations many years back. At least her face looks normal on this image as she has been looking very odd lately, with some very puffed-out collagen cheeks.
The Goddess is also on the cover of the new Dazed & Confused issue and as the mag states she is "ready for anything".

Happy Face!

This is an actual image I took from my kitchen sink the other day, un-retouched. I was doing the very plebeian task of cleaning dishes when I spotted this cute happy face that formed by air bubbles under a glass bowl. Cute, huh?
Too bad it wasn't a Virgin Mary image otherwise I could have made some real money on Ebay!

Natalie Portman @ Elle Magazine April 2008 Issue

Remember when American fashion magazines would feature actual models on their covers? That seems long gone as unless you are a celebrity promoting a movie or Giselle Bundchen, who already transcended being simply a model.
Elle magazine April 2008 cover girl is the gorgeous Natalie Portman, that can be featured in as many covers as editors seem fit in my opinion, as she is just a joy to stare at. I still haven't made it to "The Other Boleyn Girl" but it's on the list.

10.000 BC - The Movie

So I went to the movies last night. The choices were somewhat limited because of their showing times so I ended up watching "10.000 BC". I already knew that it was going to be hokey and far-fetched but the next best option required another hour wait so I went for it anyway. I do love anything with a hint of extinct animal life and these "epic" type movies do draw me in, as any special on The History Channel, Animal Planet and Discovery on the subject. I watch all those dinosaur shows on how Earth was hit by a huge asteroid that killed most life on the planet many millions years ago. Love that stuff!
The "10.000 BC" previews looked quite good, full of huge mammoths and saber-tooth tigers, cavemen-like hunters in loin cloths running on the savanna, that type of stuff. This is one of those movies that are OK for a DVD rental but save your cash on theater tickets, because if you take away the CGI effects there is very little left to it. The scenery shots are gorgeous and the special effects are pretty amazing, specially the mammoth hunt and the giant turkeys scene in the tropical forest.

The plot is pretty basic and no big surprises on how it will end. This tribe of hunters, somewhere in North Africa (?) is attacked by Egyptian (?) slave traders and most taken captive, with the exception (of course) of our hero hunter that happens to be away having a personal moment of solitude and contemplation when they arrive. The would-be slaves, including his too-pretty love interest, are taken across snowy mountains, deep forests and sandy deserts until they reach their final destination. They are being tracked all along by our hero, who along the way gathers a small army of African tribes whose loved ones have also been kidnapped by the bad guys. The plot is full of historical holes and I won't bore you with all the details as the inaccuracies are too many to list here, but I don't think the director was aiming to make a documentary anyway.
If you have nothing better to watch this movie is OK entertainment and actually giggle-inducing on certain scenes that are meant to be deep and serious, so if you have a sarcastic side you might actually enjoy it. Otherwise, I say skip it.

Celeb Mural Art

These are a few more images of my adventures here in South Florida. I am always on the look-out for cool stuff for the blog and nothing like some celebrity homages to adorn the pages of Little-Pumpkins. I am very drawn to illustration, cartoons, advertising and visual images in general. I love cute icons, mascots, murals and specially when these images try to portray recognizable pop figures. I grouped a few images that caught my eye starting with a (still) pretty looking Britney Spears, followed by a very bad Tom Selleck portrait at an amusement park. Do they really think that the kids that ride those crappy rides will even know who Magnun PI is? Then a Barbarella-looking hybrid of Jane Fonda and once again Britney. Following that is a really good rendition of Pink and Robbie Williams (whom I am a HUGE fan). I am not too sure if the skinny figure in the back is meant to be Michael Jackson or not ( I hope not). At last, a photo of some guy trying to fool us to think that he is the real Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Yeah, right...

Nina Hagen - Punk Priestess Style Icon

I remember watching Nina Hagen perform live at Rock In Rio in the mid-80's and she was the belle of the ball, total media darling and fan favorite. She wore a waist-length red ponytail, a fitted black corset bodysuit, fishnet stockings and a thong which front part was the head of a stuffed toy puppy. She had the crowd going with her trade-mark sound, a mix of falsettos, primal growls and Betty Boop-esque singing (inner) voices. She was fresh, fearless and a great inspiration to dare to be who you want to be, not giving a damn to any status quo.
Born in East Germany, Nina Hagen had already gained a reputation as a flamboyant rock singer by the time she emigrated to the West in 1976, where she formed a band, signed to CBS Germany, and released their debut album, Nina Hagen Band, in 1978. It was followed in 1980 by Unbehagen. Hagen's first U.S. release, Nina Hagen Band EP (1980), was a four-song EP consisting of songs drawn from her two German releases. She moved to New York and made her first English-language LP, Nunsexmonkrock, in 1982. That and its follow-up, the Giorgio Moroder-produced Fearless (1983), charted briefly, and "New York New York" was a Top Ten dance club hit.

Juvenile Deliquent Switchblade Comb

Delinquents With Combs looks like a classic switchblade knife. But when you press the button, a handy comb springs out instead of a blade. When open, the switchblade comb measures 9-inches long and even has a safety lock to prevent it from opening unexpectedly.
Delinquents With Combs comes in a really cool package, too. It depicts a tough greaser fiercely wielding his switchblade comb. So if you want to look good and feel cool, get one of these babies. (a leather jacket and a ripped t-shirt wouldn't hurt, either)

Cute Alert: Hairless Kitten

I just love this image of this adorable hairless Sphynx kitten! It definitely would help on the vacuum-cleaning department... It is a bit odd when caressing a hairless pet (insert dirty pun here) because it feels eerily like human skin. Those Chinese Crested dogs feel just like that. But isn't this kitty just squeezable?

Top 10 Fall Collections @ Style.Com

Style.com picked their Top 10 Fall-Winter collections for 2008 and here are their choices in alphabetical order, along with their own comments:

Alexander McQueen
Fashion's dream maker concocted his most magical collection yet, one that began with rigorously tailored pantsuits and ended with a royal parade of party frocks that took the audience's breath away.

Balenciaga

Melding classic French chic with his sci-fi sensibilities, Nicolas Ghesquière delivered another hit. The standouts: a trio of the season's fiercest L.B.D.'s, and hand-painted latex samurai jackets that will be instant collector's items.

Bottega Veneta

The go-to designer for understated, effortless luxury, Tomas Maier turned out Fall's most elegant day dresses in draped jersey with matching monochromatic tights and shoes. His pieced jackets and pleated pants scored points, too.

Givenchi

Everything clicked on Riccardo Tisci's runway: The dark, Spanish-inflected mood was in step with the season; likewise, the gotta-have-'em sexy black pantsuits and frilly blouses. He also keyed into the costume jewelry revival with masses of gold chains and crosses.

Lanvin

Alber Elbaz's technical accomplishments always deserve high praise—this season, he wound ribbon strips around the body to create tops, skirts, and dresses. But what really impressed was the chic wearability of his mostly black and navy collection.

Marc Jacobs

With their structured volumes, the coats, dresses, and pants with which Marc Jacobs closed New York fashion week were a radical departure from the sexy dishabille of his Spring line. Then, of course, the 1980's became a Fall touchstone, and Jacobs once again was in the lead.

Narciso Rodriguez

Doing his part for the new minimalism, Narciso Rodriguez focused on suits with a fresh, new roundness in the shoulders and sleeves, or "grand exit" evening dresses that were spare at the front, cleverly detailed at the back.

Nina Ricci

Olivier Theyskens gave us Fall's most delicately luminous palette—dusty yellows, greens, and browns mixed with chalky pinks, peaches, and mauves. Along with that came a new, softly constructed jacket with built-out shoulders, and more of his fabulous drapey evening gowns.

Rick Owens

Nobody cuts a statement-making coat quite like Rick Owens, and he outdid himself for Fall. Taking cues from Lee Bontecou's menacing sculptures, he used leather, suede, and denim to patch together jackets fit for urban warriors. On the softer side: lush, languid furs.

Rodarte

Japanese slasher flicks, of all things, gave birth to Rodarte's webby knitwear; shaggy, pieced suits; and wispy party dresses. That's quite a heavy starting point for what turned out to be some of this season's most ethereal clothes.

Madonna's Hard Candy

Madonna has already claimed her new album, Hard Candy, will "kick your ass." Turns out, she wasn't kidding! Witness the cover of her upcoming album, due April 29, featuring the pop diva sporting, yep, a wrestling belt. Featuring production by Pharrell Williams, Timbaland and Nate "Danja" Hills and an appearance by Justin Timberlake, Madonna's rep says the album's "about the juxtaposition of tough and sweetness."

Florida Store Fronts

I just love these two store signs I spotted the other day while driving around here in South Florida. There is a certain naive charm in these hand painted designs, specially the "Afro-American" couple adorning a hair salon's door above and the cute poodle on this pet beauty shop's sign. The pet salon also had this shaggy dog statue by the front door, but it looks to me that it has seen better days. If you owned a pet "beauty" shop, wouldn't you make sure that your store mascot would look its best always?

Make Me A Supermodel: Bye Bye Casey

I was so bummed last night watching my new favorite TV show when I heard the news that Casey had been the one chosen to go home. "Make Me A Supermodel" eliminations are based on viewers voting to keep their favorites on the run to snag the modelling contract and the 100K cash prize. Casey was by far the best looking guy in the house - model-wise I mean - and he was the sensitive, easy going token guy too (plus great hair). Somehow viewers chose to keep Ben, the prison guard/hick, that is so stiff and dull that baffles me that he is still on the show. Thankfully one of the judges, Cory Bautista, had the guts to say that America made the wrong decision in keeping him this week. Ouch!

The theme this week was Goth, flying the aspiring models to New Orleans for a photo shoot in a grave yard. The images did come out great and the styling (for the girls) was flawless as always. They tend to make the guys up too much for my taste and that doesn't work quite as well as with female models that are expected to be fully done. The idea to go Goth was a bit dated in my opinion and not really avant-garde anymore, as most past themes have been. I must say that whoever is styling the show has a very keen eye for picking great editorial-looking clothing, worthy of any big international publication. There was also a "sob moment" when they later take the models to aid in building a home for a Hurricane Katrina victim, along with Habitat For Humanity. Pure "Extreme Makeover" cheap shot.
Once back in New York the models have to come up with a Goth choreography for their runway presentation. In real life there would be coaches and directors telling them exactly what they had to do. No big-time fashion house which is spending tens of thousands of dollars in a fashion show would give carte blanche to the models to decide what to do, so this challenge was kind of pointless to me, unless the objective was to make them falter. It came out very school-play and overdone.

Holly was once again the winner this week to no one's surprise as she is fab beginning to end. She does need to work on her squeaky voice though, as a judge pointed out. I will be very surprised if she doesn't win this show.

To my dismay Ron, my favorite contestant, was up for the vote again. From this week on only two models with be selected to be voted off or not. Ben did well on the photo shoot and therefore safe from the elimination and so was Perry, even if plagued by his (ex?) girlfriend's tabloid scandal. Did Tyson really need to show him the National Enquirer's article insinuating that she is having an affair with Britney Spears paparazzo boyfriend? That was purely an attempt to instigate reality TV drama and uncalled for, specially right before the trip to New Orleans. By the way, what was Perry doing scratching his balls so intensely in bed last night?? I almost choked on my home-made cosmo!

Ron is running against Shannon, who had never been in the bottom three before. Editing made it sound like that she knows she is good so she doesn't need to try that hard. She is actually a great model and will surely have a career in fashion regardless of the show's final word, but she is coming across as too hard-ass and home viewers might not find that too endearing.

.

I was really torn who to vote for this week, as in past times it was a no-brainer. Though I love Ronnie's personality and enjoy watching him on screen, Shannon is simply a better model altogether. Ronnie has a more commercial/pretty look and Shannon is far edgier and interesting, even if not as likable. I voted 6-4 for Shannon, though I felt guilty by betraying my favorite model but I thought it was the fair thing to do.

Florida Mail Box

This nostalgic mail box made me pull over on a semi-busy road just so that I could take a couple of pictures of it. I made sure to wait until there were no cars in the background so the image was not too busy. I love it's vintage design, bright matte white paint with sharp black cartoon eyes. The attention to detail shows on the well manicured lawn as well and I am sure it's owners are very proud of their attention-getting mail holder. Love it!

Beard Cap

If you live in an area that's likely to stay cold for a while longer, or if you just have a thing for funny-looking headgear, check out the Beard Cap. Made from Icelandic wool, the handmade woven cap covers the entire head save for the eyes and nose, and features an awesome beard-like shape, complete with a woven faux mustache. From zero to Grizzly Adams in no time.

Eartha Kitt - Catwoman At 81

.

Well, now the Catwoman trilogy is complete. I just found this recent image of Eartha Kitt, TV's last Catwoman and had to post it here too. Ms. Kitt appeared as one of Batman's top arch-enemies in just three episodes during the series last season only as Julie Newmar was unavailable. Most of the villans were simply guest stars and not part of the permanent cast. Julie Newmar (13 episodes) is still my favorite Catwoman ever, though Eartha Kitt did a good job too. Lee Meriwether was cast as Catwoman for the Batman movie only as Julie Newmar was busy filming a movie during the series first season hiatus.

I actually met Ertha Kitt once a few years ago. She did a concert in Provincetown, Massachusetts one summer and I went to a meet-and-greet with the star after her show. I had been a fan of her for many years and actually owned a few of her albums and CDs, so meeting her was a dream come true. She is after all a huge icon, that had been friends with James Dean and still very active in the cabaret world. Meeting her was a total let down. She was just so bored and uninterested being there to meet her fans that she wouldn't even fake a smile when people approached her. She was just sitting there behind a table, signing autographs (I got one) and barely would look up when people praised her. Maybe she was tired or bored but she probably shouldn't have agreed to these contractual clauses if she wasn't going to even try to appear friendly and nice.

Dita Von Teese @ MGM Grand's Las Vegas

Oh Dita, how could I have forgotten you? I had this post ready to go almost a full week ago and somehow it slipped my mind and never went online. I tend to prep anywhere from 3-5 posts a day and place them on the blog as I see fit but sometimes, specially after a weekend, they get piled up and whatever is oldest stays at the bottom of the list. I save images and articles in drafts and finish them the day I post them so they remain relevant, FYI.
"Love-of-my-life Dita Von Teese caught in Vegas at the MGM Grand's Crazy Horse auditions this week looking as flawless as ever. Doesn't she looks great in purple? Actually she would look great in a burlap sack, not that she would ever wear one, unless it was a vintage-looking burlap sack."

SNL Does Project Runway's Christian Siriano

Saturday Night Live did one of the funniest TV skits that I've seen in a really long time. I almost peed my pants watching Amy Poehler do a dead-on Christian Siriano impersonation - full of "fierces", "trannies" and "hot messes" - Siriano's way-overused jargons during his successful stint on Project Runway. She picked up all his over-the-top queeny mannerisms perfectly! Bill Hader does a too-perfect Tim Gunn and his "Don't bore Nina!!" is priceless.
If SNL picks you as a character for a skit it means that, Christian, you have arrived!

Jenna Jameson For PETA

Geez, it seems like everyone and their mother is in a PETA campaign these days. The new PETA pin-up girl is porn star Jenna Jameson in a "Pleather, Not Leather" poster campaign against the use of animal hides for clothing and accessories. What confuses me is that petroleum products are far worse for the environment than organic leather, though I am against any & all cruelty towards animals. It would be more effective in my opinion to campaign against any leather-looking products all together as vinyl, plastic, pleather, etc will all be here longer than most of us and probably poison water sources and do more harm than good to animals (and people). Jenna Jameson's silicon boobs alone will outlive all of us!

Sometimes Overwhelming

Before gentrification, New York City was a gritty and inspiring place. And in its midst was Arlene Gottfried, whose eye for the sublime caught it all. SOMETIMES OVERWHELMING, her second powerHouse book, is a manic yet romantic ode to the people of New York City in the 1970s and 80s. From Coney Island’s eccentric denizens to a Hasid at Riis Beach’s nude bay to the disco nights of sexual abandon and the children in the original Village Halloween parade, SOMETIMES OVERWHELMING is a delightfully lighthearted look at the most outrageous people, in the most original milieu, you might ever see.

"Arlene Gottfried is a photographer with an eye and a mind on the city streets—an ‘insider’ with an ability to capture images of life that are raw, real, hard-edged, and caustic, and at the same time affectionate, funny, and loving." (Photo Review)

Fendi's Do-It-Yourself Baguette

Fendi has a new baguette version out in the market. It is a do-it-yourself purse in plain white canvas that comes boxed with a set of 10 Pantone Universe markers, so your inner-Picasso can come to life. The bag retails for US$1,300.00 (!!) and it is not even leather! Sure, the boxed idea is great and quite appealing to the eye. The colorful doodled lining is also a cute plus but the price is quite steep for such a plain bag, even for a baguette. Unless you get someone like Damien Hirst or Jeff Koons to customize one for you (those would be first two top picks) it could be quite a disastrous incident. Maybe a cool hipster graffiti-artist pal of yours could be entrusted with the responsibility of adding an unique touch it too but you should refrain from any Bedazzler impulses, please.

Play Till You Puke

Playland is an amusement park at in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is located in Hastings Park and is the oldest amusement park in Canada. This is a great ad campaign showing these super-kawaii stuffed dolls - the kind you get as a prize at carnivals and such - puking their stuffing out after a little too much fun. Genius!!

Easter Goodies

A selection of cute Easter stuff that I found while browsing online. Easter is just a couple of weeks away (Sunday, March 23) and I might as well start getting in the holliday spirit. I have no planned celebrations yet - and unlikely I will - but as far as I get to devour a huge chocolate egg I will be quite content!

Featured items US$5.00 to US$15.00 and all available at Pier1 Imports.

70's Style: Rod Stewart & Britt Ekland

I came across this image online of rocker Rod Stewart and his then-girlfriend Britt Ekland and had to post it here. I just love their sexy swagger and let-it-all-hang-out attitude, almost in the literal sense as well. The picture must have been taken sometime in the mid 70's and captures the essence of the period perfectly but in a timeless fashion as well. They look like they had a lot of fun together, if you know what I mean...

Holly Madison for PETA

You might see Playboy model Holly Madison, star of The Girls Next Door, wearing bunny ears, but one thing you’ll never see her in is bunny fur—or any animal’s fur, for that matter. Hugh Hefner’s number one honey bunny—who shares both Hef and his home, the Playboy Mansion, with fellow Girls Next Door stars Bridget Marquardt and Kendra Wilkinson in the popular E! channel reality show—is so passionate about saving animals killed for their fur that she posed naked for not one, but two new PETA anti-fur ads!

Wonder Woman x Catwoman: Then & Now

TV's beloved Wonder Woman, actress Lynda Carter in an image taken this week. She is still glorious at 56, as gorgeous as ever. I remember being a kid and gawking at Wonder Woman on TV thinking how could anyone be so beautiful. Every so often I catch her on the telly doing some bit part in one of the many series on American TV or at a made-for-cable movie.
Below we see actress Julie Newmar, at 74, also during an event this past week. She played the original and hottest Catwoman ever, in the campy Batman TV series in the late 60's. Sadly she does not look as elegant and poised as this other former Catwoman as her outfit of choice is very inappropriate for her age. Considering is 74 she does look fab (thanks doctor!) but still not as her fans would like to remember her.

The Complete Pirelli Calendar

The extraordinary history of the Pirelli calendars began in 1963 when the Pirelli tire company created a calendar featuring pin-up models as a promotional piece to send to its top customers as a gift for the closing year. Every year since, the company has called upon world-renowned photographers such as Richard Avedon, Mario Testino, Herb Ritts, Norman Parkinson, Bruce Weber, and Annie Leibovitz to photograph the world’s most beautiful women, including Iman, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Sophia Loren, Naomi Watts, and Penelope Cruz. It has continued to generate publicity for its exclusivity; a huge public clamors for the calendar, but it is only available to a very privileged list of corporate customers and VIPs. A product of the cultural revolution of the 1960’s, the Pirelli calendar has shaken the world with the audacity, sensuality, and innovation of its content. The images stretch the parameters of sensual fantasy and fabulous photography, but their subtlety and quality also establish the calendar as a paradigm of its genre and a coveted collector’s item. This book contains all the photographs of the calendars from 1964-2007, the never-published calendar of 1963, as well as intimate behind-the-scene photographs. Natalie Portman @ Marie Claire UK

Natalie Portman has got to be one of the most beautiful women in the world. She is simply flawless and a great actress to top it off. It's hard not to compare her to one of old Hollywood's most classic style icons - Audrey Hepburn - as she oozes the same kind of sophisticated allure and timeless beauty. Natalie Portman shown here as UK's Marie Claire April 2008 cover star. I still haven't gotten to go watch "The Other Boleyn Girl" but it's on my to-do list for the weekend as the previews look great.

New Obsession: Make Me A Supermodel

Now that Project Runway is (sadly) over I can turn my full attention to Bravo's "Make Me A Supermodel", a reality TV competition for aspiring models. Prizes included a modeling contract with some chi-chi New York agency, a spread in GQ magazine and a hefty US$100,000 check. The show is presented by the lovely Nikki Taylor and hunky Tyson Beckford, both hot commodities in the mid-to-late 90's supermodel world.

The original group of 12 contestants has been cut down to 6, as of this Thursday, and home viewers can vote by phone or web to keep their favorites in the competition. Each week the 3 models with the lowest performance scores are put up for the vote and one is eliminated on the following show.

My two favorites contestants are Holly (above) - the sweet ingenue beauty/Christian/no sex before marriage good girl from Virginia - and Ronnie (below) - the sweet/cute gay blond/home wrecker from Chicago.

I said that because Ronnie has a crush on his roommate and fellow contestant Ben, a married hick from Tennessee that has no business trying to be a model. Ben might be secretly gay as he doesn't seem to mind much of Ronnie's advances.

Like most reality TV shows this one has plenty of real drama, though not quite as trashy as Tyra Bank's "America's Next Top Model". Other contestants include Casey (below) - the 19 year-old sensitive long-haired singer/songwriter from Atlanta. Very handsome but inexpressive.

Perry - the cocky a**hole from Los Angeles, whose real-life girlfriend seems to have left him for that paparazzo that was dating Britney Spears - so says The National Inquirer. Perry just found that there's something fishy going on last episode but has no clue exactly what.

And at last Shannon - the statuesque brainy brunette from Fort Lauderdale, Florida (!), that doesn't mind to speak her mind to her rowdy house mates. Both Shannon and Perry are also great models and possible winners of the show's big prize.

I will keep you posted on the development of the show as I still have plenty to say about it!

Fornasetti Pillows @ Barney's New York

I had already seen these Fornasetti pillows a while back on Ebay listings from Italy but now they can be purchased right from your local Barney's, if you are fortunate enough to live close by to one. These cotton pillows measure 16" square and are double-faced with a different design on the B-side. They cost US$108.00 each and are actually more affordable than on Ebay if you consider the shipping fees coming from Europe. I am a huge Fornasetti fan and am proud to be the owner of quite a cool collection myself.

Kate Moss @ Yves Saint Laurent SS 08 Campaign

Kate Moss as the new (?) face for Yves Saint Laurent's Spring Summer 2008 ad campaign. In the video below you can catch a glimpse of some behind-the-scene actions during the photo shoot, along with YSL's creative director Stefano Pilati adding his finishing touches to Ms. Moss. At 34 Kate Moss is still going strong, looking pretty fab and still one of the most coveted faces in the fashion industry.

Food Fight: Mr. Bacon X Monsieur Tofu

Those culinary arch enemies -- Mr. Bacon and Monsieur Tofu -- are finally facing off. On one side we have Mr. Bacon -- that happy-go-lucky slice of smoked meat with an "I dare you not to eat me," smirk on his face. On the other side there is Monsieur Tofu himself -- as healthy and nutritious as he is arrogant and self-righteous. You'll have to decide when you have these bendable characters fight it out. Mr. Bacon stands 5-5/8" tall and Monsieur Tofu is a stocky 3-3/8". The vinyl figures have bendable arms and legs, and come in a kooky display box. Retail: US$9.99. Love it!

FIERCE! Christian Wins Project Runway

I was at the edge of my seat (literally!) last night watching the season finale of Project Runway. I had tears in my eyes (cry baby!) as Heidi Klum announced Christian Siriano as the winner of Season 4. I was so rooting for Christian to win and I really got touched by his sincere tears right before the announcement. His collection was fierce - to paraphrase his overused jargon - as he put out incredible show pieces, my favorite being his last number, a dramatic feathered couture gown that sashayed down the runway in perfect flow. I would say that it would have been a perfect fit in any European catwalk and his talent and vision in undeniable, specially when you consider that is only 21 years old! His model choices - mostly gorgeous black and dark skinned girls - were perfect for his exotic looks and the girls could walk, not to be said for some other designer's picks. The cherry on top was guest judge Victoria Beckham that came across very well spoken with constructive input and was clearly enamored with Christian's design view. Victoria looked beautiful in an orange jersey dress and even cracked a smile - something that as she puts it "is not easily done" - when watching his runway presentation.
Christian you rocked! Congratulations!!!!

Junk Food Marketing

A selection of tempting artery-clogging junk food options available on my wanderings through South Florida. The colorful neons and cheery flags seem to hypnotise Americans towards the compulsive consumption of food-shaped crap, hence the turd-on-a-stick...oops...corn dog atop one of these trailers. My favorite sign is the "Fried Twinkies" as if you couldn't make junk food even more damaging to your health - a Twinkie - by dipping in boiling lard. Yuk!
They will even give you the sh*t out for free - SPAM! - like drug dealers around a school yard recruiting new addicts for future costumers. Can it get any grosser?

Junya Watanabe Fall Winter 2008 Preview

This season the words were "geometric sculpture"—but as gnomic as that sounds, the amazing collection of draped gray jersey Junya Watanabe assembled actually needs no further explanation. There's a level at which intellectual justifications for clothing become tedious, and there was nothing difficult to understand about the beautiful complexities of the charcoal- and marled-gray knits Watanabe wound and rewound about the body in a zillion inventive ways.
This is probably my favorite collection so far! Simply fab!

Giant Mao by Frank Kozik

This limited-edition fiberglass sculpture by artist Frank Kozik was done in an edition of only 5o units. The faux-bronze bust is a hybrid between Mao Tse Tung and Mickey Mouse, has a removable cigarette - Kozik's signature detail - and comes with an accompanying print. Chanel Travelling Art Pod

The Chanel Art Pod is snap-together mobile gallery that will tour the world showing works inspired by Chanel’s padded bag. “Mobile Art” gathers the works of some 20 artists, including Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki and Yoko Ono, widow of slain Beatle John Lennon, in a flying-saucer-shaped pavilion designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid. When Hadid and Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel got together to realize their dream of a traveling museum, they named Fabrice Bousteau, editor-in-chief of Beaux Arts magazine, as the curator. The exhibition runs from Feb. 27 through April 5 in Hong Kong - it's first stop - before moving to Tokyo, New York (Sep 08), London, Moscow and finally Paris in 2010.

A brief round-up of Rihanna's European fashion show circuit, combined with her on-going series of concerts throughout the continent. Though no Dita Von Teese, she still looks as fab as always, though those gray suede shoes she wore at the Galliano show are an eyesore. They look like native-American moccasins!

Madonna @ Dazed & Confused

Goddess Madonna is the cover girl for Dazed & Confused's latest issue. In the April issue of the magazine, out March 13th, undisputed heavyweight champ of reinvention Madonna talks exclusively to Dazed & Confused's Jefferson Hack about her latest incarnation. In her first interview about her new album Hard Candy, worked on with Justin Timberlake, Pharrell, and Timbaland, Madonna discusses her many different, and occasionally contradictory, roles – as performer and provocateur, mother and artist, style icon and campaigner. Photographed by long-time collaborator Steven Klein with art direction by Giovanni Bianco at Studio 65, the queen of pop looks as uncompromising, tough and sexy as ever. This unique tribute issue also features 70 pages of Madonna-inspired fashion and art, including contributions from Katy England and Alasdair McLellan, Emile Larsson, Nicola Formichetti and Benjamin Alexander Huseby, plus new works from artists such as Matthew Stone, Alex Rose, and Daniel Sannwald.

Giuliano Fujiwara Spring Summer 2008 Campaign

Images from the Spring Summer ad campaign by Japanese designer Giuliano Fujiwara. After his death in the mid 90's his wife took over the company and with the help of a design team kept the company afloat. I actually met them both way back when I was living in Boston, many moons ago. His look was always geared towards the minimalist-with-a-twist and still remains faithful to the original designer's vision for what I can see.

Gwen Stefani @ V Magazine

The fabulous Gwen Stefani is V Magazine's March cover girl. She appears in two different cover versions shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and she looks hot hot hot! I love Gwen's great fashion sense, never afraid to take risks and steering away from the "pop princess" look and fall-traps. She is pregnant again by the way.

Smoking Lounge

Isn't this a great idea for a smoking lounge's ceiling mural? Note: I don't smoke.

This handy item is used for carrying your dipping sauces and spreads for your lunch box. Shaped into kawaii-licious his and her monkey shapes, this mayonnaise cup measures 2x3 cm (0.78x1 inch) and even comes with a banana spoon, used to scoop up the sauces and apply on sandwiches, making this a cute and useful dispenser for your on-the-go needs. A very cute lunch accessory from Japan that's pretty wacky so it makes a great conversation starter. Comes in a pack of 2. US$2.50 each set.

I just LOVE them!! These six new figures by Wish Come True have weighted bottoms and built-in bell chimes, giving each one a playful rocking motion and a subtle, soothing sound. They are sold in "blind boxes" so you will never know in advance what you might get. They cost US$7.50 each (not bad) and they would be a great addition to my Pumpkin Mansion's decor.

Palm Beach Zoo

I took these photos a few weeks ago when I spent a beautifully sunny Sunday morning visiting the Palm Beach Zoo here in Florida. The zoo is a gorgeous park where the enclosures are mostly very large outdoor natural settings, with plenty of space, foliage and water sources for the animals to roam. I am sure that a large Siberian Tiger still feels trapped no matter how large the enclosure is but it sure beats most zoos that I have visited in recent years - and I love zoos. There are no steel bars in any of the pens but simple wire mesh giving a very open feel for the spectators. You can stare at a stunning spotted leopard from a few feet away, almost too close for comfort. The animals at this zoo were all bred in captivity and are often traded with other zoos when they come of age so to avoid inbreeding. One of the most unusual animals I saw there was a white alligator - a real freak of nature - that was set in a temporary indoor exhibition to avoid the caustic Florida sun on it's delicate hide. The keeper told me that he is one of about 1o survivors from a nest found 20 odd years ago somewhere in the American South. She said that they all would have perished in the wild because of it's lack of skin pigment had they not been rescued. If the sun didn't kill them first other alligators would have finished them off because of their white appearance. Note: they are not Albino alligators by the way. They are actually just white skinned - with blue eyes (!) - whether an Albino's eye color is pink.

Comme des Garcons Fall Winter 2008 Preview

Rei Kawakubo is an Amy Winehouse fan—who knew? The multiple Grammy award winner's Back to Black played solidly throughout the Comme des Garçons Fall show, and such was the funny sideways take on trashy fifties net petticoats, dance dresses, and underwear. Seriously, though, this was Kawakubo in one of her more skittish moods. As she put it, "There's value in bad taste, too. This is Comme des Garçons bad taste." That included puffballs of tulle in red and cotton-candy pink, hairnet veils, leopard-spot hats, and lattices of elasticized satin-frilled garter straps connecting the gaps between chopped-up garments. Cheesy lip and heart motifs came into play as well, the mouths opening as suggestive frilled portholes on coats, and the love-hearts as embroideries. Still, despite Kawakubo's best efforts to confound the tyranny of "good" taste, she couldn't help but end up with a few items that might just look unironically pretty on the right girl. The black satin bra-topped velvet and chiffon negligee dress, the red circle-skirted polka-dot dance dress, and the white tulle ballet dress caged in black tape.

Designer Car Covers

Six fashion designers unveil the season's collection of couture car covers, created exclusively for Intersection Magazine, a publication that mingles "man and machine, art and design, fashion and architecture, music and film, in the back seat of a parked car."
Here you can read each designer's fascinating inspirations and creative process to achieve the intriguing final results.

Maison Martin Margiela - Paris, France

"The making of the car cover follows the same concept with our clothes design with a made-to-measure process. First we wanted a fabric that was as close to the cotton we always use for our furniture covering and press material, that is a rough boiled cotton, but taking into account the technical constraints of the purpose of the cover (water and wind proof, resistance, etc). Then we printed in real size of the car in a very contrasted black & white to create a "trompe l'oeil" effect. The challenge was to cut up the picture according to the parts of the car cover so when we put together the parts reproduce the picture in 3-D."

Visvim - Tokyo, Japan

"We came up with a pattern for the cover based on the car's specifications. We picked up the materials; we wanted to use traditional American-style hand-quilting patterns, so we found materials that would work and welded them to Gore-Tex. Once the process was complete, we stitched our quilt pieces and sealed off all the seams underneath with custom Visvim/Gore seam tape. Many years ago we used "Folk + Engineering" as a theme for one of our collections, and that seems applicable to this project as well."

Richard James - London, UK

"It's almost like a caricature of a suit. We decided the coat would be representing a bespoke suit in the making - something that's never seen other than the customer and the tailor. To begin with we made a calico toile, then pinned, shaped and sculpted on the car to fit perfectly. Then we picked out some key elements for the car - the wing mirrors, the classic Alfa grille and window shapes and highlighted them with panels of canvassing and lining."

Adam Kimmel - New York City, USA

"I collected jumpsuits from various Italian mechanics for the car cover. In Italy they wear them with colors and patches, unlike the bland grays and navy colored ones you see often in New York City. I wanted to use these suits to create something of a quilt to cover the car. I even left the arms attached to make the result more of an object. I figured if we blew air underneath, the arms would flail and give some life. When all was done the colors clashed so poorly that I threw the whole thing in a vat of black dye, which brought back that New York feeling in the end. I can't leave my roots even if I try."

Ksubi - Sydney, Australia

"When we approach design our reaction is to insubordinate or subvert a product's normal function. We found the idea of a mammoth black box that hovered two inches off the road whilst humming and blinking a tiny red alight at you, exciting. We are amused by the absurd minimalist of the idea, and also by how obnoxious and powerful the simple form could be. I might add that it would also be a great as a deterrent for would be thieves."

Bles - Berlin, Germany

"We like the idea that one could bring his/hers car upstairs and use it indoors for a different function and sit and sleep on it. It was meant to be in leather, but as it was a somehow couture dress and needed a very complex patter to fit, it took so long for us to try this first. But you should imagine it in a beige natural leather that ages and tans with time"

Cary Grant In "To Catch A Thief"

A little old-school Hollywood leading man glamour from Little-Pumpkins this morning. Here you can see the undeniable movie star charisma and timeless style of Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock's "To Catch a Thief". The movie set in 1955's French Riviera, co-starring Grace Kelly, tells the story of a retired cat-burglar (Grant) trying to discover who is responsible for serial jewelry thefts at the posh resort so the crimes don't get unfairly pinned on him. Grant, 51 at the time, is on top of his game in this flick and looks better than ever, from the wet bathing trunk to a classic tuxedo, the George Clooney of his time. I hope I get to look this good when I get to that age!

Viktor & Rolf Fall Winter 2008 Preview

Viktor & Rolf expressed their frustration with the fashion system on their last runway effort shown in Paris this week.
"We love fashion, but it's going so fast. We wanted to say 'No' this season."
They started their show with a sharp gray trench coat adorned with a 3-D "No" popping out on the model's chest. The word was recurrent also on the models' faces with bold No's used as eye make-up. With their characteristic irony they used metal staples to finish off hems, cuffs and seams. I love their conceptual fashions and once stripped of most gimmicks are beautifully tailored and dramatically original.
