Brooke Astor 1902-2007

American socialite and philanthropist Brooke Astor died today in NYC at 105 years of age from complications of pneumonia. I had followed her saga through articles I had read in Vanity Fair and New York magazine this past couple of years. The articles claimed that the society doyenne, because of her advanced age and mental state, was being neglected by her son and gold-digging new wife. Accustomed to a lifetime of luxury and comfort, she had been confined to a few rooms of her grand NYC apartment, deprived of the company of her beloved dogs and denied access to friends and pamperings. Even some of her precious jewels and esteemed artwork had gone missing without her knowledge, according to the magazines. Recently Anette De La Renta, wife of Oscar, had been court appointed as her caregiver, being a long time friend and one of the whistle blowers to the whole neglect scandal.
