Joao Pinheiro Sings Sade

I had the pleasure to watch the concert of Brazilian singer Joao Pinheiro this past Saturday night, along with my friend Ton Hyll, at the Horse's Neck Pub here in Rio. Joao's show was based on his CD of reinterpretations of the music of Nigerian Goddess Sade Adu. He infused Brazilian rythms like samba, xote, bossa nova and ciranda to construct a new identity to Sade's classic hits, to a pleasantly successful result. His versions of "Your Love is King" and "Smooth Operator" were quite touching, specially when night time Copacabana Beach is your window view. I was introduced to him during intermission and he is quite a nice guy too! You can hear a few of his songs at Joao's MySpace page and CDs are available here. Loved it!
